Healing Through Horses: Little Britches Therapeutic Riding:

Little Britches provides unique equine-based therapies to people with special needs, at-risk individuals and disadvantaged youth. Over 130 students participate yearly in therapeutic riding and driving programs designed to improve physical, mental, and emotional health.  Support from Friends of Children has increased the number of students who can receive Occupational Therapy during their lessons, and helped launch the first “Summer Bridges at Little Britches” summer camp for urban youth.

The Gift Of Hope For Kenyan Orphans:

SHARE Africa’s Orphan Sponsorship Program (SOS) makes a difference in the lives of hundreds of Kenyan children orphaned by AIDS.  Through this program, The Friends of Children has supported the health and educational needs for over 20 orphans each year.  All of us at The Friends of Children are honored to help this wonderful organization.  The following – which says it all – is an excerpt of a letter we received from a 12 year-old girl in the SOS program.  We are so proud to have a small hand in helping her to achieve her dream to one day become a nurse:

“In our school we have planted many trees.  When it is time for games, some pupils rest under the trees. We have fourteen teachers.  We like our teachers.  I have friends at
school, but you are my best friend because you are helping me on my education and health.  I pray that God continues to help you and your family.”

Joy Through Education;

Christian Appalachian Project’s Eagle Childhood Development Center is located in one of the poorest counties in America. Through the center, children of all ages are engaged in essential enrichment programs.  Eagle is the only resource center for children in the entire county, and provides healthy snacks, tutoring, and physical recreation – with an emphasis on nutrition and health to combat childhood obesity.  In addition, this year over 1,000 parent training sessions and 269 in-home family literacy services were provided by staff and volunteers.  The Friends of Children is proud to support CAP’s work for underprivileged children in the U.S.

Saving Lives, With Every Spoonful…

With one out of every ten children in Haiti suffering from acute malnutrition, Meds & Food for Kids’ peanut-based “Medika Mamba” (translated from Haitian Creole as “peanut butter medicine”) is literally a lifesaver for thousands.  Under the tutelage of Dr. Pat Wolff, MFK has been producing and distributing this life sustaining RUTF (Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food) throughout Haiti.   Having a long shelf life, with no need for refrigeration, Medika Mamba is not only used to cure malnutrition for extremely ill children, but also instrumental in preventing underweight and undernourished children from becoming malnourished.  Mothers with children being treated at the clinic are given a supply to bring home to their household to share with their family.

A New Life; A New Beginning…

Since taking in their first pregnant teenager in 1981, Several Sources has been a Guardian Angel to tens of thousands of young, unwed mothers and their children.  Their work can best be described in the words of a young mother:

“First of all, I thank you for the roof over my head and safe place while I was pregnant. Second of all, I am thankful to you for all the happiness that came to me with my son’s birth.  If it wasn’t for you and your donations, I wouldn’t have had a chance to hold my baby in my arms, enjoy feeding him, watch him eat, sleep, breathe, make faces!!  Everything he does makes me the happiest person in the world, and I want to share my happiness with you, dear benefactors.”

Several Sources is just one of many programs Friends of Children supports for the health and well-being of children in the United States.  Our gratitude to all of our supporters – it is you who make this important work possible!

Friends of Children is proud to support Education & Hope’s vital work by providing nutritious lunches as well as a pre-school reading-readiness program for the youngest and most vulnerable students.

A Fighting Chance: The Denan Project; Uratari, Peru:

These Peruvian women are waiting patiently to see an OBGYN specialist. In the past, the impoverished Peruvian village of Uratari had literally no medical care within a three-day walk. Frighteningly, approximately 10% of all children perished before the age of five, and 7% of women died during childbirth. As a result of Friends of Children’s generous supporters, The Denan Project has opened a new health clinic. With an OBGYN seeing patients two times a week, and vital access to ultrasound equipment, problem pregnancies are spotted early, and crucially needed pre-natal care is provided to significantly reduce mother and infant mortality.

The Ripple Effect of Giving: Children of Colon, Panama

In 1987, the Sisters of Mercy began their program working with poor children and their single mothers in Colon, Panama. With no more than a small rented corner space to provide services, the sisters worked with love and compassion to provide everything these desperate families needed — food, medicine, education, skill development, and tending to their spiritual needs.

On the day they opened their doors, a young mother came seeking help for her six children, including her little 2-year old boy, Nando. With the sisters’ help, Nando grew up healthy and is now the father of three children. Nando has not forgotten the gifts the sisters gave him. Today, though he works two jobs and struggles to provide for his family, Nando comes to the center every Saturday to help the poor children. He teaches them on donated computers, spending time with them as the sisters did with him and his brothers and sisters 24 years ago. And there are plenty of hugs to share also!

When you give to Friends of Children, you help create a ripple effect of giving that resonates through generations.
